Eye problems are relatively common in dogs and cats and can range from mild irritation to conditions that require more involved treatment. At our veterinary hospital, we can examine your pet’s eyes, help identify the cause of common eye problems, and provide appropriate treatment or ongoing management when possible.
Our team can provide basic ophthalmic care, including medication-based treatment for certain eye conditions and artificial eye placement when appropriate. If your pet requires specialized diagnostics, advanced eye surgery, or care from a veterinary ophthalmology specialist, we can discuss referral options with you.
Why would my pet need eye care?
Your pet’s eyes can be affected by a variety of conditions, including infections, inflammation, irritation, injuries, and other underlying health problems. Early evaluation is important because some eye conditions can worsen quickly and may affect your pet’s comfort or vision.
When should my pet have an eye examination?
You should have your pet examined if you notice any changes to their eyes or vision, including:
Watery or excessively tearing eyes
Excessive blinking or squinting
Redness or irritation
Swelling or puffiness around the eye
Changes in the appearance of the eye
Rubbing or pawing at the eye or face
Sensitivity to light
Discharge from the eye
A noticeable change in vision
Signs of discomfort or pain around the eyes
If your pet has a sudden change in vision, a significant eye injury, or a painful or swollen eye, prompt veterinary attention is recommended.
How will you treat my pet?
Treatment will depend on your pet’s symptoms and examination findings. Depending on the condition, treatment may include:
Drug therapy: Prescription eye medications or other medications may be recommended to help manage infection, inflammation, irritation, or other appropriate eye conditions.
Artificial eye placement: In appropriate cases, we can place an artificial eye to improve your pet’s comfort and appearance following removal of a non-functional or painful eye.
If your pet’s condition requires advanced ophthalmic surgery, specialized diagnostics, or treatment beyond the services we provide, we can recommend referral to a veterinary ophthalmology specialist.
